What Is ‘Little’ Abuse

By Chineye

I AM A WOMAN WITH AN AMAZING JOB!

I AM A WOMAN WITH A GREAT LEVEL OF SELF ESTEEM

I AM WOMAN WHO WILL NEVER TOLERATE PHYSICAL ABUSE…..

These were just a few statements She used to make at the beginning.

Patricia was an established lawyer. 7 years into practising and she was known as a force to be reckoned with. She worked with one of the biggest firms in her city and was ready to take over the world around the time she decided to settle down and get married.

Patricia’s husband was a big-time real estate manager. He moved around a lot but mostly spent his time in the city with his wife. While they were dating, Patricia consistently made it known that she would never tolerate being physically abused. She was a smart and amazing woman and she would not settle for less.

She thought that abuse could only come in that form or that physical abuse would just start one day when a man decides to raise his hand. What she didn’t know was that it starts in the littlest of ways.

Hers’ started on a day when she had come back late from a meeting and he had asked her why she forgot to leave a key for him. As she tried to explain that she had thought he had his keys when he left, he raised his voice even higher until hers’ was drowned. Eventually, she had apologized for locking him out and they moved on.

Then, he had woken up one morning angry that she had forgotten to turn on the Air-conditioner before going to bed and he had to get up in-between the night to do it himself. Patricia caught up in trying to prepare for a case had not been paying attention to what he was saying until he shut her laptop with force calling her attention.

Littlest of things, but Patricia didn’t think they were things to worry about, he was probably having a rough time at work.

After a few uneventful months. Patricia had come home one afternoon to find her husband casually dressed and ready to head out. As she tried to persuade him to stay back and help her with lunch, he walked out, roughly hitting her with his shoulder.

Yes, you guessed right! Patricia was pissed this time. She waiting for him to get back and repeated it to him, I will not tolerate physical abuse from you….it was a long talk but she knew her husband got the message or so she thought.

They moved on with their lives without hiccups until her husband began to point out things about her in mockery tones. ‘It would have been so great if I married a light-skinned woman’, “Patricia, I feel like your chin gets saggier every day”…..and on and on and on and on. If anyone had asked her if she was being abused at home, she would have said no but her mental health was suffering. She would walk into courtrooms feeling like all eyes were on her ‘’saggy” chin and in no time, what made her a confident lawyer would have been buried under those thoughts.

There is no Little abuse

We need to guard our minds against abuse just as much as we guard our body against it!

MENTAL ABUSE IS JUST AS DANGEROUS AS PHYSICAL ABUSE!

Emotionally I’m a wreck. I feel I’m strong but it’s getting to me. I want to forge ahead but the harsh words spoken to me that made me feel I was nothing still keeps on dragging me back. So yes, there are no little abuse
