1. Your human nature — Your choices and preference, everything that makes you human.

2. Your capability or ability —Things you do effortlessly, your natural gifts and talent. That thing you can do uniquely and different from others.

3. Capacity — the amount and volume of things you can offer, that thing that lies inside of you untapped.

As more girls get educated and do well in school and public life, a narrative keeps being pushed about the ultimate goal being to serve the interests of ‘the brotherhood’.

The purpose of marriage is partnership, mutual love and respect, shared values and goals, each party complementing the other and raising a family together.
Marriage is not a rehabilitation center, prison, baby factory or slave camp. It is no surprise that young girls are now pushing back with rather disturbing narratives of their own.

I was having a conversation recently with some friends, and one of the topics we discussed was domestic violence. One of them expressed frustration that many victims of domestic violence end up going back to their abusers after all efforts have been made to change their circumstances. It is a familiar issue and there is no one who works on these issues who has not experienced this. Remember the case of the woman in Abia State who was saved by her neighbors last year when her husband beat her and kicked her out half-naked at night? She wrote a lengthy letter to explain she has returned to him. Her choice.

There are Cassies and Diddys everywhere. In our families, amongst our friends, our neighborhoods, or places of work and worship. The men do not have to be rich and powerful like Diddy. They just have to be men, who have been socialized to believe they can treat women like dirt. The women do not have to be illiterates frying buns at the roadside. They can be Lawyers, Doctors, Professors and Bank Managers. All they have to do wrong is fall into the hands of men with large egos and low self-esteem.

There is something we can all do. We can start by understanding the issues for what they are. Domestic violence is not about expressing love, lack of respect, submission or humility. It is about abuse of power and trust, manipulation, viciousness, wickedness, narcissism and predatory behavior. Is this what we want for our daughters and sisters? To those who will say, women abuse men too, that is correct and it is not right either. All we have to do however, is to assess the body count. What do the numbers say about this? It is a shame that in the year 2024, we are still having conversations about domestic violence around the world.

A fool with no sense of responsibility, no dignity, no restraint in thought word or deed. A careless, thoughtless person who was missing on the queue the day wisdom was being handed out on the way to earth. A person lacking in self-worth, nobility and decency.

The Alainitijus now have a whole new world open to them

To display their ignorance, stupidity, greed, spite, envy

Nothing is too sacred

Nothing is taboo

Nothing is too outlandish

Nothing is too unbelievable

Now we have a crisis on our hands

Those who know better keep quiet

Perhaps we should not blame them

Sometimes you get tired when you feel like a broken record player.

THE ETIQUETTE OF MOURNING

I apologize in advance if what I am about to say comes across as a scolding from a school principal to unruly teenagers. Many times, adults who are supposed to know better do behave like teenagers, even like toddlers. At least a toddler has an excuse. There are many teenagers wise beyond their years, and even when they make mistakes as they are bound to, they can be forgiven because it is understood they will learn and grow. What is the excuse of an adult who hears about the passing of a young person, and without giving it a second thought, rushes to social media to break the news to the world within seconds? In what capacity are you announcing the news? As a family representative? As a close friend? As an employer? At the time you are making your ‘announcement’, most family members, sometimes even the children of the deceased, have not heard.

Those who are very close to the deceased are too shocked to post anything, so it is not likely to be coming from them.
I am aware social media is bound to continue affecting the way we communicate and behave. I however find myself increasingly frustrated with the sheer lack of empathy and common sense these days.

The arrival of death triggers reactions relative to the person concerned. Some deaths cause profound suffering and misery. In the cases of older persons, after the initial grief has worn off, the families get down to preparing a grand celebration. People often wonder, what is worse or better, a young person dying suddenly, without notice, or after an illness, with enough time to say goodbye? I have experienced the pain of very close friends either dying suddenly or fading away in my arms. I wish neither on my worst enemy. We simply do not know when our time will be up. All we can do is live the best life we can.
