MAKING IT BETTER: Don’t Underestimate The Power Of The Subconscious Mind

I love the concept of the subconscious mind. Partly because I grapple with it constantly, but even more importantly because I am constantly faced with how impactful it is in people’s lives and how unaware people are at how powerful a part it plays in their lives.

Let’s start off by being clear about the difference between the conscious and subconscious or unconscious mind. Just as it suggests the conscious mind is what we are aware of, where we actively live and where we actively feed thoughts and ideas and beliefs. The unconscious on the other hand is where thoughts and suggestions are stored. Habit is the function of the subconscious mind. We are all creatures of habit! Somewhere in my unconscious mind I have created many narratives that have worked to undermine many plans I set out for myself. The subconscious mind is amenable to and controlled by suggestion. We are constantly unknowingly feeding our unconscious with ideas and beliefs. The unconscious takes whatever we feed it as fact and truth. It then goes about sending those messages back into our conscious minds and we are in trap if those thoughts are negative!

There is so much we don’t know about our subconscious and unconscious mind. When the unconscious life is ignored or avoided, it generally tends to become an enemy and may come out, with possibly explosive force in the impact it has on our interpersonal relationships.

The natural language of the unconscious is not a science or precise, it is not straightforward. It’s flexible and full of mythology. According to Freud’s psychoanalytic theory of personality, the unconscious mind is a reservoir of feelings, thoughts, urges and memories that are outside our conscious awareness. Whatever mental picture you have which is held up by culture, religion or any other believes in your conscious mind, your subconscious mind will surely bring it to life.

The unconscious continuously influences our behaviour and experiences even though we are unaware of these underlying influences. Think of your conscious mind as the camera and the subconscious as the part you register and press the picture.

The unconscious mind contains our biologically based instincts for the primitive urges for sex and aggression. While we are fully aware of what is going on in our conscious mind, we have no idea of what information is stored in our unconscious.

The unconscious contains all sorts of significant and disturbing information which we try and need to keep out of our awareness because they are too threatening to fully acknowledge. The material in our unconscious is so powerful that it is kept buried but never the less they exert a significant influence.

Freud believed that the influence of the subconscious and unconscious reveal themselves in a variety of ways including dreams, and in slips of the tongue, now popularly known as ‘Freudian slips’. The unconscious also known as the dreaming or deep mind is knowledgeable and powerful in a different way than the conscious mind. The unconscious mind handles the responsibility of keeping the body running well. It has the memory of every event we have ever experienced. It is the source and store house of our emotions.

You form patterns of habit in your subconscious mind by repeating a thought and act over and over again until it establishes a home in your unconscious and become automatic. That’s why habits are so hard to break because it’s something you have been doing repeatedly and your unconscious mind has now taken over and made it a necessity for you. The same applies to practicing sports or any activity. The more you do the activity the better you become at it. Imagine just how powerful this can be if we form good habits! It is said one of the things almost all successful people have in common is staying on course and not deviating from what they believed in. Even when they failed it didn’t deter them. We have the power of choice. We can either choose a good habit or a destructive or bad habit. Seems to be a no brainer, but we all know it’s not as easy as that!

No model of how the mind works disputes the unconscious. The conscious mind is constantly supported by unconscious resources. Just imagine for a moment of all the things you know how to do without conscious awareness. For instance if you drive, there are several specific skills that must be employed automatically without even thinking about the process. The skills, and process require intelligence, decision-making and training and it all happens seamlessly.

Only a small amount of information can be held in our conscious mind; things associated with thinking, analysing, making judgements and decisions. The conscious mind is actively sorting and filtering its perceptions because only so much information can reside in our consciousness at once. Everything else falls back into our subconscious and unconscious mind.

Whatever the conscious, reasoning mind of a man believes, the subconscious mind will accept and act upon. That is why it is vital not to feed your mind with negative thoughts, ideas and suggestion.

You can bring into your life more power, more prosperity, more happiness and more joy by learning to contact and release the hidden power of your subconscious and unconscious mind. You already posses the power within to gain the necessary knowledge and understanding of your unconscious mind. Within our unconscious depths lie infinite wisdom, infinite power and recognising the potentialities of your deeper mind can help to make your life grander, richer and nobler than ever before. Though invisible the forces of the subconscious and unconscious are mighty, and within them you will find most if not all the solutions to your problems.

The power of the subconscious has been known to lift people out of crippled psychological states, making them whole, vital and strong again, able to experience happiness, health and joy.

All our experiences, events, conditions and acts are the reactions of our subconscious minds to our thoughts. It’s not so much the thing we believe in but the belief in our minds, which bring about the result. We need to desist from believing in false beliefs in, opinions, superstitions and general fears of mankind. We should strive or seek the truths of life and eternal verities that never change.

An excellent way to get acquainted with the functions of your mind is to think of your mind as a garden. You are the gardener and are planting seeds (thoughts) in your subconscious and unconscious mind all day long, based on your habitual thinking. As you sow in your unconscious mind, so shall you reap in your body and environment.

The subconscious mind is powerful. It is this same mind that may have kept you a prisoner and trapped for years due to the poor, destructive diet you have fed it for years. It can become the most enabling, helpful, and release you from bondage and lead you to true happiness if you train it and use it to your advantage.

Begin to sow thoughts of peace, happiness, righteous action, good will and prosperity. Think quietly and with interest on these qualities and accept them fully in your conscious reasoning mind. Your unconscious mind may be likened to soil which will grow all kinds of seeds (good or bad). So it makes sense that if you continue to plant wonderful seeds (thoughts) in the garden of your mind, you will reap a glorious harvest. Every thought is a cause and every condition an effect. For this reason, it is essential that you take charge of your thoughts so as to bring about a desirable condition and environment around you.

When your mind thinks correctly and healthily, when the thoughts deposited in your unconscious mind are constructive, harmonious and peaceful, the magic working power of your unconscious will respond and bring about harmonious conditions and the best of everything.

Controlling your thought processes is key to harnessing infinite power that dwells within us. Knowledge of the interaction of your conscious and subconscious mind will enable you to transform your whole life.

Your subconscious mind takes the orders you give it based upon what your conscious mind believes and accept are true.

We all have a treasure house within us. Your subconscious mind is the builder of your body and can heal you. Change your thoughts and in turn you can change your destiny. Be more circumspect, ask open intelligent questions, and seek the truth. It’s really not that complicated if we humble ourselves and keep checks on all our biases, our criticisms of others, our jealous thoughts and our overwhelming modern day need to hate others who are different from us. We are currently experiencing the effects of the way we as a people are thinking and behaving across the world.

Psychologists and Psychiatrists point out that when thoughts are conveyed to your subconscious mind, impressions are made in the brain cells. As soon as our subconscious accepts any ideas, it proceeds to put it in effect immediately.

Think and do something different today and make a positive difference to someone’s life, to your environment and ultimately your own life!
