The women wing of All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Kano state chapter, has said that women are being excluded in various agricultural interventions and empowerment programmes, especially those anchored by the state government.

Kano state chairperson of AFAN, Hajiya Fatima Sharif, told journalists in Kano that female farmers in the state were left to fend for themselves without being included in the state government’s various empowerment programmes.

She noted that the farmers responded to the calls of the state and the federal governments to engage in self-reliant endeavours but met with disappointment.

“It is discouraging to see that after being courageous enough and our subsequent engagement in what is termed as male dominated profession, women farmers in Kano state are left out in most of the empowerment projects embarked upon by the government.

The issue has reached an alarming rate that some women farmers are considering a change in their chosen practice. We have formed associations and also followed all the needed procedures and yet we are relegated to no place in government priority list,” lamented Hajiya Fatima.
