Kenya: Oparanya Hosts Inaugural Governors’ Roundtable On Gender

 Governors will this week converge in Kakamega County for a gender roundtable aimed at ensuring gender equity and equality in County development and policy formulation is realized.

The forum which will be hosted by Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya and his spouse is geared towards tracking the gains of women, youth and persons with disability in the process of planning, budgeting, implementation of projects and tracking within the Counties.

Bomet County First Lady will also attend the forum which will serve as institutional mechanisms for enhancing public participation of women, youth and persons with disabilities in order for these special groups to engage the County Governments on specific needs and priorities.

Council of Governors Director of Communications Andrew Teyie says the overarching objective of the Governor’s Gender Round Table, is to create a platform where County based women organized groups at all levels of the County, can come on a round table with their Governor and highlight issues of concern to women in order to enhance their participation in the development agenda of the County.

Other objectives of the Governors Roundtable include to create a platform and working relations between the County government, the women, youth, and persons with disability and development partners with the aim to advance women’s socio-economic status and Governors will have an platform to affirm his commitment in ensuring gender equality is engrained in county governance and practice in all the 47 County Governments.

The monthly rotational forum will also be an avenue for governors and county citizens especially women, youth and persons with disability in the county showcase success stories of devolution and the positive impact to their lives through enable them effective engagement in development and public participation in decision making at County level.
