Drama ensued at Ongerei Primary School when a 15-year-old girl developed labour pains in class while sitting for her final Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), prompting the school administration and invigilators to take her to a health unit.

The incident happened at about 10am while the minor was sitting for the mathematics paper. She was rushed to Ngora Health Centre IV where she delivered a baby girl. Police escorted her back to school to resume the paper.

East Kyoga police spokesperson Michael Odongo confirmed to Daily Monitor that police accepted to escort the girl to the health facility after the school administration was sought on the matter.

“After she delivered, she was brought back to school and continued with her mathematics paper as her sister only identified as Agwang took care of the baby,” Mr Odongo said.

He said police treated the incident as normal examination fever, ruling out malpractice.

Mr Odongo, however, said the incident has compelled police to commence with investigations into a defilement case.

“As police, we are going to investigate the case of defilement since the girl is under age. We want the person responsible to be apprehended because it’s criminal to defile children,” Mr Odongo said.

He said the rest of the region largely remained peaceful with the candidates hoping to sit for English and Science papers today.

Efforts to contact the district education officer, Moses Ochung, about the examination exercise were futile as his known phone number was switched off throughout the day.
