THE Standard Organisation of Nigeria has solicited the collaboration of the Nigeria Customs Service to check the influx of sub-standard products in Cross River State.

The Head of SON, Cross River State office, Mr. Udeme Udom, made this known on Tuesday in Calabar when he paid a courtesy visit to the Area Comptroller of NCS in the state, Mr. Bapetel Umaru.

Udom said the visit became necessary following the rate of substandard and fake products being detected by his men  in the state.

According to him, one of the core objectives of the organisation is to rid the Nigerian markets of substandard products such as automobile, consumable products, electrical appliances and others.

He said, “SON is more than ready to ensure that the state is free from substandard products such as automobile, consumable products, electrical appliances and others.

“That is why we are here today to collaborate with you in other to achieve the fight against substandard products in the state.

“We want to collaborate with you so that together we can deploy our men to border areas where these substandard products are being smuggled into the state.”

He added that SON as an organisation would continue to enforce its standard in making sure that the best products were sold to consumers.

Responding, Umaru said that the NCS was aware of the statutory role of SON, especially in the area of standardisation of quality of products.

He said that only products certified by SON and other regulatory agencies of government were allowed  into Nigeria by the NCS.

“I am assuring you of the collaborative support of the NCS in eradicating substandard products from the state. I wish to also assure you that we will work as a team to ensure that consumers get quality products for their money,” he said.
