The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) has said that agricultural produce from Nigerian farmers are being rejected abroad, especially by countries of the European Union (EU) due to Afro-toxin materials present in the produce.
This, according to the council, informed its rigorous efforts at continuous education of farmers on best practices.
Trade Promotion Officer of NEPC, Mrs Leticia Onu, made these known to our correspondent on Wednesday at the on-going first Lagos International Agriculture Fair, organised by the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Lagos State chapter.
Onu said the NEPC, as a promoter of non-oil exports, is working with AFAN to ensure that its members add values their farming.
According to her, the on-going fair has given NEPC the opportunity to have profile of more farmers to be included in its database for training, adding that there is need for the association to create more awareness on subsequent fairs to attract more participants.
She noted that some of the fishes showcased at the exhibition should have been allowed to dry further. “This is why training on best practices is important. We have gone round and see the potentials; we will get the farmers together and reach out to them for capacity building in our training programmes,” she stated.
