The importance of a healthy body system and well-being cannot be overemphasized. And this is largely influenced by the substances we consume, particularly food. Eating healthy meals tend to boost the body’s immune system. And as a result, it produces antibodies that fight diseases.
It has not been established that COVID-19 can be spread through food but the good news is: we could always eat better for a stronger immune system. To help cope with the stress that may be related to the pandemic, it is important that you take care of your body and this includes good nutritional feeding as a part of self-care.
In this article, I would be sharing some nutrition and health tips to practise during this pandemic to ensure safe feeding.
- Try as much as you can to always eat fresh and unprocessed foods every day. Consume more fruits, vegetables, legumes, and foods from animal sources. In the case of snacks, choose raw vegetables and fruits rather than food high in sugar, salts or fats. Do not also overcook vegetables as this can lead to loss of important vitamins present in it.
- Before cooking, wash your hands with soap and water thoroughly at least 20 seconds.
- Avoid eating out. Eat at home to reduce your rate of contact with other people and your chances of being exposed to COVID-19. You cannot tell if the hands of the people you will meet are washed regularly enough and also if surfaces are disinfected fast enough.
- Drink enough water. Water is essential for life. It helps transport nutrients and also compounds in the blood. Try to drink 8 – 10 cups of water daily.
- Lastly, if you are considering taking vitamins or supplements, talk with your pharmacist registered dietician or other healthcare providers before taking them.
While proper nutrition and hygiene help to improve health, they are exactly not magic bullets. Therefore, it is still important to observe the safety COVID-19 measures by local health authorities. I hope you find this helpful. Stay safe and healthy out there.
