Professor Mahmood Yakubu has officially concluded his tenure as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after serving two consecutive five-year terms.
Yakubu handed over to National Commissioner May Agbamuche, who now assumes office in an acting capacity pending President Bola Tinubu’s appointment of a substantive chairman.
He urged INEC staff to cooperate fully with the Acting Chair to ensure continuity in the commission’s work.
Meanwhile, political parties under the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) have called for the creation of an Independent Appointment Committee to select future INEC leaders, arguing that presidential appointments compromise the commission’s neutrality and public trust
