The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has given food manufacturers 18 months to remove industrially produced trans fats from all products sold in Nigeria.

The directive, announced by NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, forms part of a new national strategy to curb heart disease, stroke, and premature death linked to trans-fat consumption.

Adeyeye described the move as both a “technical achievement and a moral imperative,” urging collaboration from government, industry, and civil society.

The new policy, which follows Nigeria’s WHO recognition for best practice in 2023, aims to make the country a regional leader in public health and food safety.
