A Federal High Court sitting in Warri, Delta State, has ordered the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police to suspend the enforcement of tinted glass permits.
The interim order, issued on Friday, directs the police to maintain the status quo pending the determination of a suit filed by lawyer John Aikpokpo-Martins challenging the legality of the new permit policy.
The court’s decision follows widespread criticism of the resumed enforcement, with motorists accusing police officers of harassment and extortion.
The police had earlier defended the policy as a national security measure under the 1991 Tinted Glass Act, but rights advocates argue it violates citizens’ rights and targets law-abiding drivers.
