China has introduced a new K visa designed to attract foreign graduates in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, offering entry, residence, and work rights without the need for employer sponsorship.
The visa, effective October 1, 2025, is seen as Beijing’s bid to strengthen its technology workforce amid tighter U.S. restrictions on the H-1B programme. Analysts say the move could particularly appeal to Indian STEM professionals, though language barriers and geopolitical frictions may pose challenges.
Unlike the U.S. system, which requires employer sponsorship and is capped annually, China’s K visa targets graduates with at least a bachelor’s degree from recognised global institutions. Officials say it complements broader efforts to attract investors and skilled workers to boost competitiveness in advanced industries.
