A Lagos State Magistrate Court in Ikorodu has ordered two DNA tests to determine the paternity of Liam Aloba, the only child of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.
The ruling came after an application was filed by Mohbad’s father, Mr. Joseph Aloba, who asked the court to establish conclusively whether Liam is the biological child of his late son.
Magistrate Adefisoye Sonuga ruled that one DNA test must be conducted in Nigeria, while the second should be carried out in an accredited hospital outside the country.
The court also directed that: Both parties or their representatives must be present during sample collection.Tests should be conducted in government-approved facilities. Samples, including tissue or hair, may be collected from Mohbad’s remains preserved at the Military Hospital, Yaba.
In his application, Mr. Aloba stated that uncertainty around Liam’s paternity needed to be resolved for the sake of the child’s welfare and maintenance rights.
“Given the sensitivity of the matter, it is imperative that the paternity be conclusively settled to determine maintenance obligations and ensure the child’s welfare,” his lawyer, Augustine Adegbemi, argued.
The respondent in the case is Omowunmi Cynthia Aloba, Mohbad’s widow and Liam’s mother. Her legal team did not object to the application.
Magistrate Sonuga granted the order and adjourned the case to November 11, 2025, for further proceedings.
Background
Mohbad, a rising star in Nigeria’s Afrobeats music scene, died in September 2023 under controversial circumstances. His death sparked nationwide protests, investigations, and ongoing legal disputes over his estate, royalties, and the paternity of his son.
Liam was born in April 2023, just months before Mohbad’s passing. Since then, public speculation and family disputes have fueled calls for a DNA test, with Mr. Aloba insisting on verification despite initial resistance from the widow’s family.
