President Bola Tinubu has returned to Abuja after a state visit to Brazil that underscored Nigeria’s intent to strengthen ties with Latin America’s largest economy and expand its global partnerships for national renewal.

His aircraft landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at 1:20 a.m. on Thursday, where he was received by senior government officials, according to a Presidency source.

Tinubu departed Brasília on Tuesday afternoon, taking off from the Air Force Base at 12:57 p.m. (local time). He was seen off by senior Brazilian diplomats, including Amb. Carlos Sérgio Sobral Duarte, Secretary for Africa and the Middle East, and Brazil’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Amb. Carlos José Areias Moreno Garcete. Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and other top officials were also present at the farewell, which featured a guard of honour led by Col. Cel Nicolas.

The President arrived in Brasília on Monday, August 25, to a red-carpet welcome and full military honours at the Palácio do Planalto, reflecting the importance Brazil attaches to its relations with Nigeria.

During bilateral talks with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Tinubu secured the signing of five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering aviation, foreign affairs, science and technology, and agriculture areas critical to Nigeria’s economic recovery.

The agreements, beyond ceremony, are aimed at boosting food security, stimulating industrial growth, and positioning Nigeria as an attractive destination for investment.

With Petrobras preparing a return to Nigeria, Air Peace set to launch direct Lagos–São Paulo flights, and new frameworks for cooperation in place, the visit is being described as one of the Tinubu administration’s most consequential diplomatic engagements to date.
