The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has resumed direct revenue collection at the cargo terminals of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, after a 15-year break.
This was disclosed in a statement by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, via the agency’s official X handle on Saturday.
According to the statement, officials from FAAN’s Directorate of Cargo Development and Services have been deployed to the cargo release points of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) and Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) warehouses to oversee real-time collection of accrued cargo charges.
“For the first time in more than a decade, FAAN officials are directly stationed at the cargo terminals to ensure transparent and accountable revenue collection,” the statement read.
FAAN also confirmed that the new system is being implemented in partnership with the PTC Customs Area Command, led by Comptroller T. Awe. The collaboration is expected to plug revenue leakages, improve accountability, and strengthen efficiency within Nigeria’s air cargo sector.
The authority described the development as a milestone in its drive for transparency, operational efficiency, and inter-agency cooperation, noting that it will also boost revenue performance and ease of doing business in the aviation industry.
FAAN added that the breakthrough recorded at MMIA would serve as a model for similar initiatives across other airports nationwide, further optimising cargo operations and unlocking new opportunities for the aviation industry.
