President Bola Tinubu departed Abuja on Thursday, August 14, for a diplomatic trip to Japan and Brazil, making a stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, before heading to Japan.
In Japan, President Tinubu is attending the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama, which runs from August 20 to 22. The conference, themed “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa,” focuses on Africa’s economic transformation, improving business environments, and promoting innovation through private investment. It also highlights building a resilient and sustainable African society with human security, peace, and stability.
During TICAD9, the Nigerian President is participating in plenary sessions, holding bilateral meetings, and engaging with CEOs of Japanese companies investing in Nigeria.
TICAD, initiated in 1993 by the Japanese government and co-hosted by the United Nations, UNDP, African Union Commission, and World Bank, is a triennial conference that alternates between Japan and Africa. The previous edition was held in Tunisia in August 2022.
After the conference, President Tinubu will travel to Brasilia, Brazil, for a two-day state visit from August 24 to 25 at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. In Brazil, he is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with President Lula, attend a business forum with Brazilian investors, and explore opportunities to strengthen cooperation through agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Brazilian government.
