Nigeria’s triumphant Super Falcons returned home in glory today, landing at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport to a rousing welcome by government officials, football fans, and cultural performers. Their victory celebration continued as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu hosted the team at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The reception comes on the heels of the Falcons’ stunning 3–2 win over Morocco in the final of the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON), held Saturday at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

Addressing the nation at the event, team captain Rasheedat Ajibade dedicated the victory to Nigerians, especially young girls across the country.

“This is a celebration for every young girl in our villages, towns, and cities who dares to dream,” she said. “This title is for you, Mr. President. It is for Nigerians, for the Super Falcons, and for every Nigerian girl who dreams of standing on this stage.”

In recognition of their historic achievement, President Tinubu announced a generous reward for the entire team:

  • National Honours: Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) for each player and technical staff member
  • Housing: A 3-bedroom apartment for each
  • Cash Award: $100,000 to each player and crew member

Earlier, President Tinubu had sent a special presidential delegation to Morocco ahead of the final. In a statement released by the State House, the President hailed the team’s performance as “awe-inspiring” and a powerful display of national pride and unity.

The President also praised the team’s show of sportsmanship in the semi-finals, when Nigerian players visited South African opponent Gabriela Salgado after her injury.

“I am very, very proud of you,” Tinubu told the team. “The entire nation celebrates you. You’ve lifted our spirits. You are the pride of a generation.”

He extended his congratulations to the coaching crew, officials, and sports ministers, with a special mention of Rasheedat Ajibade’s courage during the decisive penalty kick.

“Enjoy your well-earned victory, take care, and avoid injuries,” the President added. “God bless you all.”
