In an unexpected political twist, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, made a surprise appearance at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum meeting held in Abuja on Sunday.

Wike’s presence was particularly striking, given his prolonged absence from PDP activities and his prominent role in the G5 faction—a group of dissenting governors who distanced themselves from the party’s leadership during the 2023 elections. His appearance comes at a time when the PDP has been navigating internal rifts, high-profile defections, and speculation about realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting, chaired by Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, brought together six serving PDP governors and several former governors and stakeholders. Those in attendance included Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Peter Mbah (Enugu), and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara). Notably absent was Governor Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), who has recently been the subject of speculation regarding a possible shift toward the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Wike, who arrived at the venue around 9:23 p.m., joined his former G5 colleagues—Sam Ortom (Benue), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu)—alongside other stakeholders. His attendance has triggered renewed discussions about the possibility of reconciliation within the party or a potential shift in his political strategy.

Although no official statement has been released on the outcome of the meeting, Wike’s unexpected appearance is already being interpreted by many as a signal of unfolding political recalibrations within the PDP—one that could shape the direction of opposition politics as the country looks ahead to 2027.
