The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially commenced the disbursement of the long-awaited N77,000 monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members. This development comes after months of frustration and uncertainty following the delayed implementation of the increase.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu initially announced the pay hike in September 2024, raising hopes among corps members across the country. However, despite the announcement, they continued receiving the previous N33,000 stipend—an amount set in 2020 under former President Muhammadu Buhari—for nearly six months.
The delay in implementing the new allowance sparked widespread concerns, with many corps members struggling to cope with rising living costs. Now, with the long-overdue disbursement finally underway, there is a collective sigh of relief among beneficiaries who have eagerly awaited this financial adjustment.
The Federal Government has yet to clarify the reasons behind the prolonged delay, but this step marks a significant milestone in addressing economic hardships faced by young graduates participating in the mandatory service scheme.
As corps members begin receiving their revised stipends, attention now shifts to ensuring consistency in future payments and addressing broader economic challenges affecting Nigerian youths.
