FirstBank of Nigeria has commenced the construction of its new eco-friendly headquarters in Eko Atlantic City, Lagos, marking a significant milestone in sustainable banking infrastructure in Africa. The groundbreaking ceremony, held on March 5, 2025, was attended by prominent figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and FirstBank Holdings Chairman Femi Otedola.
The planned 43-story edifice is set to become Nigeria’s tallest building upon completion. Designed with green certification, the headquarters aims to minimize environmental impact and operational costs, setting a new standard for eco-friendly construction in the financial services sector across Africa.
Governor Sanwo-Olu officially presented the Certificate of Approval to FirstBank, authorizing the immediate commencement of construction. He praised the bank’s vision and leadership, highlighting the project’s role in redefining the future of Eko Atlantic City.
Eko Atlantic City continues to attract major corporations, solidifying its status as Nigeria’s burgeoning financial center. Notably, industrialist Aliko Dangote announced plans to relocate his conglomerate’s headquarters to the city, further enhancing its commercial appeal.
President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, laid the foundation for FirstBank’s new headquarters, describing it as a symbol of Nigeria’s ambition and progress.
Shettima, speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, stated, “Today we lay the foundation for a monumental structure in Nigeria’s financial landscape, the FirstBank iconic tower, a symbol of our nation’s progress and ambition. This tower will stand as a testament to our economic strength and vitality. The tower, which will be the tallest building in West Africa at 40 stories upon completion, symbolizes confidence in our country’s future.”
He highlighted FirstBank’s legacy, noting its 130-year history as a pillar of the Nigerian economy, empowering businesses, supporting families, and driving financial innovation. “From Lagos to London and across major financial centers worldwide, FirstBank has proudly flown Nigeria’s flag on the global stage,” he added.
Shettima also commended the Chagoury Group, the developers behind Eko Atlantic City, for their vision and investment in Nigeria’s financial future.
Reaffirming the administration’s commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment, Shettima emphasized President Tinubu’s economic reforms aimed at attracting significant investment and transformative projects.
