Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Tems has announced the cancellation of her upcoming concert in Kigali, Rwanda, citing concerns over the nation’s involvement in the ongoing conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Tems, born Temilade Openiyi, was scheduled to perform at the BK Arena in Kigali on March 22, 2025. In a statement released on social media, she expressed her unawareness of the regional tensions at the time of scheduling the event. “So I recently promoted my show in Rwanda without realizing that there is ongoing conflict between Rwanda and Congo,” she wrote. “I never ever intend to be insensitive to real-world issues, and I sincerely apologize if this came across that way.” She added, “I simply had no idea this was going on. My heart goes out to those affected.”
The decision comes amid heightened international scrutiny of Rwanda’s alleged support for the M23 rebel group, which has intensified its offensive in eastern DRC, recently seizing the strategic city of Goma. The conflict has led to significant humanitarian concerns, including widespread displacement and instability in the region.
Tems’ cancellation reflects a growing awareness and sensitivity among artists and public figures regarding geopolitical issues and their potential impact on local populations. Fans and observers have largely commended her decision, acknowledging the importance of standing in solidarity with affected communities during times of crisis.
