Today, January 15, Nigeria observes Armed Forces Remembrance Day, an annual event to pay tribute to the fallen heroes of the Nigerian Armed Forces, including those who fought during World War I, World War II, and the Nigerian Civil War. It also serves as a reminder of the military’s ongoing efforts in combating insurgency, banditry, and other security challenges facing the country.

The central event of the commemoration is the wreath-laying ceremony held at the National Arcade in Abuja, presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Top government officials, military chiefs, and members of the diplomatic corps joined the president in paying homage to the fallen heroes.

State governors, traditional rulers, and other dignitaries also participated in similar ceremonies across the 36 states, demonstrating a unified show of respect and gratitude for the armed forces.

In his address, President Tinubu emphasized the need for continued support for the families of fallen soldiers and the welfare of military personnel. He called on Nigerians to contribute to the Armed Forces Remembrance Fund, which provides assistance to veterans, widows, and orphans of deceased servicemen.

“Our armed forces have made great sacrifices to safeguard our peace and unity,” the president said. “Today, we honor their memory and reaffirm our commitment to supporting their families and ensuring the welfare of those still in active service.”

The day also serves as a call for national unity and a reflection on the collective responsibility to ensure peace and security in the country. Many Nigerians have taken to social media to share messages of gratitude and solidarity, using hashtags like #ArmedForcesRemembranceDay and #WeRemember.
