As part of independence celebrations, a group of women from Ntaja in Machinga on Saturday cheered the sick at Machinga District Hospital.

Patients at the hospital were relieved after they received assorted items including six wheel chairs all valued at K15 Million.

District Nursing Officer, Gertrude Ngwalo commended Mtaja Women for the gesture saying many patients especially those admitted to the hospital were struggling to meet their daily needs.

“It is not easy for some patients to have three meals per day. As a hospital, we are trying our best only that our resources are not adequte enough to cater for the patients needs,” she said.

Ngwalo revealed that Machinga District Hospital had only six wheel chairs and that with the donation some problems would be reduced.

“We are experiencing some problems when it comes to moving those who cannot walk due to limited wheel chairs, but now it will be history,” said Ngwalo.

She further asked other well-wishers to support the hospital with other things like oxygen concentrator and delivery beds among others.

The group’s chairlady, Alice Mkolokosa said apart from supporting women to venture into small scale businesses the group also does charity work by helping the sick and other vulnerable people in the community.

She said in celebrating Independence Day the group thought it wise to celebrate together with people who were in hospital.

“People in hospital need a lot of things such as groceries, but due to some other problems they do not afford that. We decided to give them the few we collected,” said Mkololosa.

She further asked other well wishers to come and support those in hospitals for they need help.

One of the guardians, Febe Kangaza whose son was admitted to the hospital commended the women for the help saying she did not have such basic needs.

“The food which has been given will help me as I had nothing. I am also encouraged with the word from the Bible,” said Kangaza adding that for three consecutive days she had been bathing without soap.

Member of Parliament for Machinga East, Esther Jolobala is a member of Ntaja Women Group.
