LOUD WHISPERS: As The Year Draws To An End

When I started Above Whispers in February 2016, I made a commitment to write a Loud Whispers article every week. I knew there was no way I could commit to posting something daily on the website, and I did not want something sporadic, so I decided on a weekly column. Even though I love writing, sometimes having to stick to a schedule, even a weekly one, can be a bit of a challenge. By far my greatest difficulty has been creating time to get my article in on schedule every Sunday evening. My staff at Above Whispers tease me that there are two things they are sure of on a Sunday – going to church and receiving Loud Whispers. I have written my column in cars, on planes, at airports and at all times of the day and night. When Funmi Ajala, the Managing Editor of Above Whispers did not get my article yesterday, she called this morning to check if I was okay. Even when I came down with malaria in August, I managed to send Loud Whispers in. I assured her I was alright. I simply gave up trying to do it all. I have been at our country home in Isan-Ekiti, Ekiti State with my husband for Christmas, hosting  at least a thousand people over three days, supervising the distribution of gifts, receiving community leaders and paying visits to elderly relatives.

I decided to take some of the advice I have often given other people – you do not have to do it all. You can permit yourself to do enough to make you sleep comfortably at night with a clear conscience. If you stress yourself out trying to do everything all at once you will find yourself not being able to do anything at all. I smiled to myself when it dawned on me that this is my very last article of the year and it is the only one that came in late. Surely, that is not a coincidence? I don’t think it is. Perhaps this is my own way of winding down for the year and reminding myself that I do not run on batteries. As we all wind down for the year, I would like to remind us of some of the lessons of life that we are all familiar with, but often do not pay enough attention to.
