The Western Cape health department has suspended all ties with the agency which employed a Cape Town doctor accused of raping a woman at the Nyanga Clinic, a spokesperson said on Tuesday.

The 46-year-old locum doctor was arrested on Monday night after the 26-year-old woman laid a charge, provincial police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said on Tuesday.

She was allegedly raped in the doctor’s consultation room. She reported the attack to the clinic management.

The department’s deputy director of communications, Mark van der Heever, told News24 that staff immediately contacted police, and the man was arrested.

“The doctor was employed as a locum doctor via an agency. The department has since suspended all ties with the agency, pending the outcome of the investigation,” he said.

The woman was getting trauma counselling and the department was helping the police with their investigation.
