Eliud Kipchoge’s victory on Sunday in the men’s marathon wrapped up Kenya’s best performance at the Olympic Games. The team won 13 medals: six gold, six silver and one bronze.

Team Kenya deserves congratulations for its gallant show in the face of the myriad of challenges and problems that its members have faced owing to the incompetence and mismanagement of the Ministry of Sports and the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (Nock). The sportsmen and women have shown remarkable perseverance and patriotism and have put the interests of the country first.

As we welcome our heroes and heroines back home, the government must demonstrate that it is serious about tackling the chronic mismanagement of our sports by taking action against all the Nock and Ministry of Sports who failed in their duty of looking after the team here in Kenya and in Rio, Brazil.

The confusion that reigned over poor training facilities and chaotic travel arrangements must be addressed. It is embarrassing that some of the kits meant for the sportsmen and women are reported to have been sold on the black market.

Similar issues have assailed Kenya’s teams to other international competitions, yet they have never been addressed. It is time these problems were tackled conclusively and those responsible held to account.
