Somalia: Nisa Briefly Shut Radio Shabelle, Detain Journalists

Somali Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) forces stormed the building of Shabelle Media Network in Mogadishu on Thursday evening at 7:30pm local time.

Radio station was taken off air briefly by NISA soldiers who arrested 5 staff members, including Desk news editor Ali Ahmed Abdulle (Ali Somali) and Mohamed Aden Onkod, a reporter.

NISA troops set free Three staffers during the shut down of the Radio, but took two Journalists into Mogadishu custody.

The Radio station was attacked for reporting News about the seizure of Lafoole, a village near Mogadishu by Al Shabaab militants on Wednesday night from Somali federal government.

Mogadishu-based Radio Shabelle won 2010 Press Freedom Prize the “Media of the Year” awarded by Reporters Without Borders.

The Network is Somalia’s most respected privately-owned radio station established in 2002.
