Maasai men have been condemned for embracing oppressive traditions that cower their partners to the extent women do not raise their voices to demand their rights like that of property ownership.

A resident of Muhuzi Village, Ms Leah Laizer, said during a meeting that men had more voice and rights over ownership of property even if they had obtained the property together with their partners.

When the husband dies, she said, his son inherited all the wealth, leaving the widow with nothing.

“This tradition has made us lag behind as other communities forge ahead,” she said.

But Mr Lengwesi Ikoneti Makutule Hamlet elder, said Maasai women should blame themselves for being too timid to demand for their rights.
