South Africa: Government Calls On Women to Share Their Stories During Women’s Month for Tell Her Story Campaign

Government calls on all Women to share their stories during Women’s Month for the Tell Her Story campaign using the hashtag #TellHerStory. This forms part of the 60th anniversary commemoration of the 1956 Women’s march to the Union Buildings against pass laws. The 60th anniversary of the Women’s March will be held under the theme; “Women United in Moving South Africa Forward.”

The #TellHerStory campaign will be part of the 8 day countdown towards the 09th of August 2016, when the 60 years anniversary will be commemorated at the Union Buildings.

The 8 day campaign will be on social media platforms focusing on various daily themes. Government will be telling the #TellHerStory on the following platforms: YouTube on the channel GovZA, twitter on @GovernmentZA, @Dept_of_Women and on the webpage: http://www.gov.za/2016WomensMonth from 1 August 2016.

Members of public can join in the online conversation by sharing how much they you know about historical 1956 March, why did it happen and how?

On Thursday 4 August, Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women, Susan Shabangu will lead an interdenominational prayer in Mankweng, Polokwane. The prayer will signify unity in prayer for the prosperity of South Africa.

On Friday, 5th August, Minister Shabangu will also host a dialogue with Women activists in Tshwane who have been active in the struggle during the landmark periods of 1956, 1976 and 2016.

In preparations for the main celebration, President Jacob Zuma has established an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) to plan and coordinate the historic 60th anniversary commemoration led by Minister Shabangu.
