Uganda: Queen of Katwe Trailer Sets Tone for the Movie

By Andrew Kaggwa

Last week, academy award winning actress Lupita Nyong’o took to her Instagram and broke the news of the release of Queen of Katwe and announced the release of the trailer that was due in 24 hours.

The post was punctuated with the official poster of the film.

The next day, though, Ugandans more than anyone in the world, would be drawn into a frenzy when the Kenyan actress shared the YouTube link baring the very first trailer of the chess drama; the film follows the life of Phiona Mutesi, a Ugandan girl that came from unimaginable situations to take the chess world by storm.

The film stars Lupita Nyong’o alongside Selma star David Oyelowo, of course also featuring a huge Ugandan cast, including Peter Odeke, Joanita Bewulira Wandera and Madina Nalwanga who portrays Mutesi.

After the trailer was released, many Ugandans were seen sharing the link on social media with messages that suggested they couldn’t wait for September.

However, much as the film will be released on September 23, Ugandans will likely see it in October or even later.
