All is set for the yearly May Ball of the Nigerian Society for the Blind holding on Saturday at the MUSON Centre, Onikan, in Lagos State. The event is one of the flagship activities organised by the society to showcase the ability in disabilities of the visually-mpaired, while drawing attention to their plight.

The chairman of the society, Asiwaju Fola Osibo, said the event would also be used to solicit support from Nigerians for the students of the Vocational Training Centre (VTC), Oshodi.

“In the words of Helen Keller, ‘optimising is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope or confidence.’ These are inspiring words from a woman who refused to let blindness limit her life, and it’s the same zeal and positive outlook we are inculcating into our students to make the best of their situation.

“The key words from Keller’s statement are faith, hope, confidence and achievement. These four words also form the bedrock on which the Federal Nigerian Society for the Blind (FNSB) was founded.

Since 1955, we have been committed to rehabilitating and empowering visually-impaired adolescent and adult, so that they command dignity and respect while achieving their full potentials,” he said.

Ace Nollywood actress, Sola Sobowale, said: “Living outside the country for over 15 years has made me realise that we live in a society where the disabled are neglected . People with special need are not looked after. I am here to associate and give people with special needs the opportunity to live a meaningful life.”
