Rant Of The Day – The Last Born Situation

By Grace Shaibu

Welcome to the rant column

I am the last born they say, the automatic house maid in the family. The one who gets all the things done because my elders ones did it even if they didn’t do as much as I could do . They will send me on errands every little time they want me to do something and when I say, I am not up to it, they will say I am pretending. They will say I am hiding from work. I know I do that sometimes, but not all the time.

Give me some slacks! I am not a maid, I am a child too, a daughter or a son. My parents will send me out, my elders will do same. God help you if you have almost 5 elder ones before you, jeez! That’s the end of it all. Can I just be allowed to chill and do things on my own for a second?

This is what you will hear… Wash the plates, after washing the plates, sweep the room, then carry the box to the bus-stop and do this and that. Then, when I forget to do just one thing? They call me lazy. They say I cannot do anything? Really? just because of one thing?

In this setting most especially in Nigeria, Being a Last Born takes quite a lot of energy…

To whom it may concern…

By, an exhausted Lastborn

That’s not true ma’am. I’m the first child of the family and I do almost all the work and that really makes me pissed.

Being a last born is what I never prayed for but am a victim. I have six elder ones who always send me around, even though they spoil me with gift but I still feel like a maid in my own father’s house.

Some last born don’t do anything at home. My kid bro is a living example, you never get to find him at home when there’s work to do.

I wish my siblings could see this rant so they can know I don’t deserve to be sent around.

I can totally relate with this, you’d have to serve and work for everybody and even get beaten since you’re the smallest and weakest. It’s not easy

Funny, only the last born will be in support of these. Last borns are mostly spoilt children. First born experience more.
