Nigeria’s diagnostic healthcare sector is entering a new phase of growth, driven by expanding demand for medical testing, new investments in technology, and a growing network of private diagnostic centres across the country.
A recent industry report by Mordor Intelligence projects that Nigeria’s clinical laboratory services market will grow from $641 million in 2025 to $670.8 million in 2026, eventually reaching $841.92 million by 2031. The forecast represents a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.65 percent between 2026 and 2031, signaling steady expansion in one of the country’s most critical healthcare segments.
For years, access to reliable diagnostic services in Nigeria was limited. Outside a few major teaching hospitals, patients often faced significant hurdles obtaining accurate medical tests. Many were forced to travel long distances within the country or abroad to access advanced scans and specialized diagnostics.
Infrastructure constraints were a major factor behind the gap.
Much of the available equipment in earlier years was either outdated, poorly maintained, or frequently out of service. Advanced imaging technologies were scarce, and the few facilities that possessed them were often overwhelmed by demand.
However, industry analysts say that picture is gradually changing.
Private investment and improved management structures have led to the emergence of modern diagnostic centres equipped with advanced imaging systems, automated laboratory technologies, and improved quality standards. These facilities are helping expand access to testing services and reduce the reliance on foreign laboratories for certain procedures.
Behind this shift is a growing group of healthcare entrepreneurs and executives who are expanding diagnostic infrastructure, improving service delivery, and modernising medical testing across Nigeria.
Among the leaders driving the sector’s transformation are several founders and chief executives who oversee some of the country’s largest diagnostic service providers.
They include Dr. Prosper Okonkwo, CEO of APIN Medical Laboratory & Diagnostics Company Ltd; Dr. Olusola Akinniyi, MD/CEO of Union Diagnostic and Clinical Services; Dr. Alok Bhatia, CEO of ECHOLAB Radiology and Laboratory Services; and Dukor Ndidi, CEO of MeCure Healthcare Limited.

As demand for medical testing continues to grow driven by population growth, rising awareness of preventive healthcare, and increasing rates of chronic disease industry observers say diagnostic services will remain a critical pillar of Nigeria’s healthcare system.
With new technologies, expanding laboratories, and stronger private-sector participation, the country’s diagnostic landscape appears to be entering a period of sustained transformation.
