Nollywood filmmaker Funke Akindele has reached another historic milestone as her film, Behind The Scenes, crossed ₦2 billion in box office revenue, reinforcing her status as one of the most commercially successful filmmakers in Nigerian cinema history and the most successful female director at the box office.

The record follows the success of her earlier blockbuster, A Tribe Called Judah, which became the first Nigerian film to gross over ₦1 billion, marking a turning point for women-led productions in the industry.

Reacting to the achievement, Akindele described the milestone as a reminder of purpose rather than an end goal, emphasizing that numbers alone do not define creative success.

“Records are milestones, not the mission,” she said. “From A Tribe Called Judah grossing ₦1 billion to Behind The Scenes crossing ₦2 billion and still counting, this is God in motion. I return all the glory to Him.”

She added that her guiding principles remain unchanged: serving the story, respecting audiences, refining the craft, and allowing quality work to earn its applause.

Film industry analysts say Akindele’s back-to-back box office feats have expanded the ceiling for women in Nigerian cinema, proving that female-led stories and productions can deliver both cultural impact and commercial dominance.

With Behind The Scenes still screening nationwide, projections suggest the film’s earnings could climb further, extending its record-breaking run and deepening its significance for women in film.
