The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has proposed compulsory drug integrity tests for drivers seeking licences in Nigeria.

Chairman of the agency, Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), disclosed this at the National Summit of Special Marshals of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Abuja on Wednesday.

Represented by Deputy Commandant General of Narcotics, Umoru Ambrose, Marwa said the measure was necessary to curb accidents linked to drug and alcohol use among drivers.

He noted that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the NDLEA and FRSC was being finalised to allow joint highway operations, including on-the-spot drug tests for drivers and passengers.

According to him, trained FRSC officials will be empowered to carry out the tests, which are expected to deter commercial drivers from abusing drugs and alcohol.

Deputy Corps Marshal Pauline Olaye praised the initiative, describing it as a timely strategy to strengthen road safety efforts across the country.
