Nigeria has recorded a major milestone in indigenous defence manufacturing as Vinicius International officially commences local production of security hardware.

Fully licensed under the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), the company has set up an armoured vehicle assembly line and integrated surveillance solutions hub in Abuja. Industry experts say this marks a decisive shift towards reducing Africa’s long-standing dependence on imported defence equipment.

This development comes at a time when Africa’s military expenditure surged to $51.6 billion in 2023 — a 22 per cent increase in just one year — with over 95 per cent of the continent’s security hardware still imported from Russia, China, the United States, and European suppliers.

Vinicius International says its Abuja facility will produce tactical armoured vehicles designed for African terrain, along with advanced surveillance systems and unmanned aerial solutions tailored to the continent’s unique security realities.

The company is also investing heavily in human capacity through its Advanced Security Command and Control (ASCC) division, which will train security personnel to operate and maintain modern defence systems.

The firm has already proven its large-scale capability — in January 2024, it delivered over 1,000 armoured vehicles to Nigerian security forces, a move hailed by industry observers as a “significant step towards security self-reliance.”

Beyond Nigeria, the facility is expected to serve as a regional production hub, supporting the growing defence needs of countries in West and Central Africa, including South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A security analyst, speaking on condition of anonymity, noted: “Africa’s need for reliable, locally built security hardware has never been greater. Vinicius is bridging a capability gap that has persisted for decades.”
