Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland, has passed away at the age of 91. The iconic monarch died on Sunday, July 13, just hours after the death of his longtime friend and former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Having ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, Oba Adetona reigned for over 64 years, making him one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers. Known for his firm voice on national unity, ethical governance, and traditional values, the late monarch was a symbol of wisdom and cultural pride.
Born on May 10, 1934, and crowned king at just 26, Oba Adetona transformed Ijebuland into a bastion of peace, commerce, and progressive development. His reign witnessed infrastructural growth, business expansion, and the global recognition of cultural events like the Ojude Oba Festival.
He was also a vocal advocate for constitutional roles for traditional institutions and remained an influential voice during both military regimes and democratic transitions.
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State mourned the monarch’s passing, calling it “a great loss to Ogun State and Nigeria.”
“Oba Adetona was a beacon of unity, development, and cultural pride. His reign shaped Ijebuland and beyond in ways we will cherish forever,” the governor said in a statement.
The Awujale’s passing, occurring the same day as former President Buhari’s, has deepened national grief. Tributes have continued to pour in from leaders across the country.
May Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona rest in peace. His legacy will endure for generations.
