MTN Nigeria has implemented a 50% increase in its data tariffs, following the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) recent approval of the adjustments. While a 50% hike was approved, not all tariffs increased by the same amount.

Some of the revised data plans:

  • 15GB weekly plan: Increased from ₦2,000 to ₦6,000.
  • 1.8GB monthly plan: Increased from ₦1,000 to ₦1,500.
  • 400GB 3 months plan: Previously priced at ₦50,000, Increased to ₦120,000 for 480GB.

Other smaller plans like 2.5GB 600, have stayed the same. A senior MTN executive confirmed the updates, stating, “Yes, we’ve started updating our price lists. However, this process is gradual, and we haven’t completed it for all products yet.”

The NCC approved this tariff adjustment on January 20, citing rising operational costs and the need to ensure the long-term sustainability of the telecommunications sector. The Commission emphasized that the decision aligns with its regulatory mandate under Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.

In response, the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers has voiced its opposition, threatening legal action against the approved tariff increase. They argue that the hike is insensitive and places an additional burden on consumers already grappling with economic hardship and poor network service delivery.

The House of Representatives has also intervened, directing the NCC to suspend the recent 50% hike in telecommunications tariffs, citing the economic hardship being experienced by Nigerians.

As the situation develops, subscribers are advised to stay informed about further changes and consider adjusting their data usage accordingly.
