President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama has commended Tewane residents for empowering women.
Speaking at a kgotla meeting at the village on March 22, President Khama acknowledged the spirit of women empowerment at the village, where kgosi, Village Development Committee (VDC) chairperson and area councillor are women.
He termed the development a positive move in the modern world.
President Khama, who donated chairs, blankets, football kit for the village team and Bibles, among others, said government would consider increment of VDC allowances.
The VDC chairperson had requested that government consider increasing the committee allowances to motivate members to serve their constituents well.
On other issues, Minister of Land Management, Water and Sanitation Services, Mr Prince Maele informed residents that the village had been connected to Mogome boreholes.
However, Mr Maele conceded that water reticulation around the village was still a challenge.
Some residents had complained to the President about shortage of potable water in their village.
Meanwhile, President Khama on March 23, told residents of Mowana ward in Mahalapye that all villages in the country would benefit from the P10 million allocated to constituencies to undertake community projects.
He was responding to a request by the Ward Development Committee chairperson, Mr Orelebile Baatweng, who during a kgotla meeting at the ward had asked government to create long-term projects for Ipelegeng programme.
Mr Baatweng had said that in their ward, Ipelegeng only did minor jobs such as bush clearing and cutting down of trees, something that he said was not of much importance compared to long-term projects that would benefit the community in the future.
On other issues, President Khama advised Mahalapye residents to visit health facilities to get medical assistance.
He said before government offered ARVs, many lives were lost, noting that with the advent of the HIV suppressing medication, people led healthy lives and the rate of HIV/AIDS-related deaths had gone down.
