Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Olusola Adeyeye (APC, Osun Central) yesterday clashed with the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, over a clause in the gender equality bill.
The bill was sponsored by Senator Biodun Olujimi (PDP, Ekiti South).
Ekweremadu had while contributing to the debate said Clause 4 of the bill was in conflict with Section 42(1b) of the 1999 constitution and that there was comprehensive provision for discrimination against not just women but people based on their religion.
Disagreeing with Ekweremadu, Adeyeye, who is a co-sponsor of the bill, said its provisions did not conflict with the country’s constitution and advocated for the introduction of gender character.
