Nigerian and British-Nigerian creatives were among the standout winners at the British Academy Film Awards on Sunday night, securing top honours at the ceremony held at London’s Royal Festival Hall.

Filmmaking brothers Akinola Davies Jr. and Wale Davies won the award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for their feature film My Father’s Shadow.

Set against the backdrop of Nigeria’s turbulent 1993 presidential election, the film follows two young brothers navigating a life-changing day in Lagos with their father. Shot entirely on location in Lagos and Ibadan, the project has been praised for its intimate storytelling and vivid portrayal of Nigerian history.

Reacting to the win, Akinola Davies Jr. described the moment as a significant milestone not only for their family but for the global recognition of Nigerian stories.

The evening also marked a career highlight for British-Nigerian actress Wunmi Mosaku, who clinched the Best Supporting Actress award for her role as Annie in the film Sinners. She edged out strong contenders, including Teyana Taylor and Emily Watson, at the 79th edition of the awards.

Mosaku, who was visibly pregnant during her acceptance speech, delivered an emotional tribute to her daughter, describing her as her “greatest teacher.”

The trio’s victories mark another milestone for Nigerian representation on the global film stage, underscoring the growing influence of African and diaspora storytellers in international cinema.
