A Ugandan court has released prominent human rights activist Sarah Bireete on bail following her arrest late last year over allegations linked to the handling of voter information.
Bireete, the executive director of the Centre for Constitutional Governance, was detained on December 30 after publicly questioning the credibility of the national voter register ahead of Uganda’s January 15 general election. Prosecutors accused her of unlawfully disclosing voters’ data, charges she has denied.
Magistrate Winnie Nankya Jatiko ordered her release after she satisfied the court’s bail conditions. The case remains ongoing.
Her arrest sparked widespread criticism from both local and international human rights organisations. Groups including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch described the detention as an attempt to silence civic voices and suppress scrutiny during the election period.
Uganda’s electoral commission later declared President Yoweri Museveni the winner of the election, with official results showing he secured 71.6 percent of the vote, extending his decades-long rule.
