The African Development Bank Group has approved a $33.64 million investment to expand skills development and innovation in Rwanda’s healthcare sector. The funding will support Phase II of the Centre of Excellence for Biomedical Engineering and e-Health, based in Kigali Innovation City.

The project will train 470 students in biomedical engineering, digital health, and rehabilitation sciences, while also supporting advanced training for university staff. It includes upgraded facilities, modern laboratories, new equipment, and stronger collaboration with the private sector and international institutions.

A major highlight is the creation of a Biomedical Innovation Park, designed to help students, researchers, and companies develop health technologies tailored to local and regional needs.

By strengthening local expertise, the initiative aims to improve access to quality healthcare, reduce dependence on imported medical services, and support digital health solutions such as telemedicine. The project will run until 2030 and aligns with Rwanda’s vision for a knowledge-driven economy and a resilient health system.
