Communities from Salima Central’s Maganga Kuluunda ward Wednesday commended their female councillor Beatrice Mbewe for initiating development projects especially in the education sector.
According to the communities Mbewe has managed to initiate six primary schools, renovated a secondary school, bridges and paid bursaries to needy students as well as giving them school uniforms.
The communities made the sentiments during an interface meeting Centre for Human Rights Rehabilitation (CHRR) under women empowerment project.
Speaking with Malawi News Agency (MANA) councillor Beatrice Mbewe said that a good leader has to be responsible, kind and able to negotiate with people.
“My obligation as a councillor is to serve and I make sure that my people are developing. With this I make sure that I serve all people despite their party differences, and I don’t let politics compromise my duties because we are all one,” she said.
“I am one of the councilors who lead a very difficult ward; it’s composed of two Traditional Authorities that make it difficult for me to operate, lucky enough I have a member of parliamentarians who always made it possible for us to prosper,” she added.
Civic Education Coordinator for CHRR, Thandizo Mphwiyo commended the communities for supporting the councillor in her success and urged them to vote for more women in the coming elections as one way of empowering women.
“Malawi is democratic country and with the results I have seen from the female councillor it is good indications that we are making progress in women empowerment, most of the people have a bad attitude towards women,” he said.
CHRR started their women empowerment project in 2009 and it’s getting its funds from the Norwegian Embassy aiming at increasing women participation and 50-50 campaign.
