The Northern Region Water Board (NRWB) on Monday donated MK1.5 Million to Beautify Malawi Trust (BEAM) for the education of a girl child.
The financial support complements to the trust’s efforts of ensuring that girls particularly the vulnerable complete their education and by that way, fulfill their dreams and aspirations.
Speaking after receiving the cheque at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, Malawi’s First Lady, Gertrude Mutharika patron for Beam trust said she was happy to see organizations such as Northern Region Water Board embracing the Trust’s dream and that they were willing to start up partnerships with the organisation.
“Our dream is to have more educated girls and that can only be fulfilled with support from various organizations. Let me commend NRWB for the financial support which will go a long way in assisting our needy girls,” Mutharika explained.
She said about 50 secondary school girls from the north will benefit from the assistance and that those successful will continue receiving the support until they complete their college level.
On the sanitation equipment, Mrs Mutharika said the duty of BEAM is not just about sweeping in the streets but rather advocating and promoting environmental friendly activities in the cities, towns and communities and also making the country greener by replenishing trees lost through excessive cutting down.
“I have always desired to have a clean and beautiful Malawi. This is a dream, and it is not just for me or the State President. This is a Malawian dream. We all need to join hands to work together in fulfilling this dream. I am happy that Northern Region Water Board has embraced this dream and you have come forward to partner with Beautify Malawi Trust to fulfill this dream,” the First lady said.
Among the sanitation equipment donated includes 30 shovels, 50 rakes, 30 wheelbarrows and 30 drum trash bins.
Titus Mtegha, Chief Executive Officer for NRWB said the vision of his institution is portable water for all which is inspired by a motto from basics to excellence.
He said for both the vision and motto to be realized there is need for right resources such as human and infrastructure capital but most importantly the sustainable water sources.
“We realize that we cannot do everything on our own, we need support and collaboration from various partners. We noted that Beam Trust and us desires and cherishes same values for cleaner and heather Malawi especially through the management and protection of our water catchment areas and this is a reason for our donation today,” explained Mtegha.
He commended Beam for bringing about positive change in people’s lives especially in the area of environment and girls education.
Mtegha assured that the board will continue to support the trust in addressing the environmental challenges facing the country.
Beam Trust was established to purposely create a greener and cleaner Malawi through a number of interventions. The trust was also formed as a platform where vulnerable girls in secondary school could get help and complete their education.
So far, apart from the provision of school fees, the trust is also constructing girl’s hostels in Community Day Secondary Schools across the country.
