There is no better example of a young person blazing trails than 19-year-old Olympic gymnast Simone Biles. Biles is changing what people believe is possible in professional gymnastics. She executes the most difficult moves consistently. She is the first American woman to win a gold medal in vaulting. She is the first female gymnast to win three consecutive World Championships. Her four gold medals in Rio make her the most decorated American gymnast of all time. There is no disagreement among pundits or gymnastics insiders that Biles performs on a different plane- everyone else is competing for silver.

She is the role model every parent wants for their children — a good-natured young woman, with a momentous work ethic who handles herself with tremendous grace under extreme pressure. Biles has accomplished more in her short life than so, so many accomplish in a lifetime.

Here are a few things we can learn from Simone Biles:

Make TheBiles, Rio 2016, Olympic Impossible Routine

Biles can push herself three to four feet higher than most professional gymnasts off the Amanar Vault. Her balance beam routine and dismount have the highest level of difficulty in the all-around. She performs a tumbling pass on the four-inch beam that almost all other gymnasts would only execute on the floor. The degree of difficulty of her routines in the all-around were the highest or tied for the highest.

Biles is redefining what can be done in professional gymnastics by mastering moves and entire routines gymnastic insiders thought would only be executed a handful of times. She practices relentlessly, and developed an unparalleled athleticism. With her discipline and dedication, she has made rare moves and innovative routines normal- which puts Biles in a league of her own.

Be A Great Teammate

Biles cemented herself as the greatest gymnast of all time with her Olympic medals, but one of her closest friends is teammate Aly Raisman, who received the silver medal in the all-around — a huge achievement for Raisman. Biles told ESPN, “I think I was more proud of Aly getting silver than me gold,” Biles said. “She’s worked so incredibly hard during her comeback. She’s one of my role models, and I don’t think there’s anyone I’d rather share the podium with. I’m more happy for her than I am myself.”

Biles has been described as a friend to all of her teammates, and the goofball of the “Final Five.” The team has said they are all better gymnasts for knowing Biles.

Handle Yourself With Grace

The media has a habit of wanting name a successor to every champion or trophy winner. Once a celebrity and/or athlete has received the most prestigious awards and achieved a certain status, the media wants to know who their successor is, who is the next big athlete. It often can take on a sexist tone; in that vein, the media will deem someone the next Michael Phelps, which they did to Biles. She stated unequivocally, “I am not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps, I am the first Simone Biles.” Biles knows her value, and her place in history which is rightfully hers — she’s not going to let the media cheapen her accomplishments.
