Akin Omotoso won Best Director at the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards for his movie “Tell Me Something Sweet”.
In his acceptance speech, the director said there were people who told him no one would watch this film.
Omotoso was nominated alongside Sara Blecher (for “Ayanda”), Stephanie Linus (for “Dry”), Walter ‘Waltbanger’ Taylaur (for “Gbomo Gbomo Express”), Shirley Frimpong-Manso (for “Rebecca”) and Ishaya Bako (for “Road to Yesterday”).
Other big winners from the event which held on March 5, 2016 in Lagos include Daniel K Daniel who won Best Actor, Adesua Etomi who won Best Actress and Stephanie Linus who won Best Overall Movie Africa for “Dry”.
“Tell Me Something Sweet” premiered on September 4, 2015. The feature film is set in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is about a hopeful writer called Moratiwa who runs a bookstore in Johannesburg. As the writer suffers from lack of love and writer’s block, her faith changes when she meets a model called Nat at a nightclub.
Omotoso has directed several films and documentaries including ‘Man on Ground’, ‘God Is African’ and ‘Wole Soyinka – Child of the Forest’. He is also know for acting in ‘Lord of War’ alongside Nicolas Cage, Blood Diamond and South African TV series ‘Generations’.
