Pakistani filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy won the Oscar for Best Documentary-Short Subject for her project based on honour killing titled “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness” at the 88th Academy Award ceremony.

“This is my second Oscar,” said Obaid-Chinoy, while receiving the trophy at the gala event taking place at Dolby Theatres, here on Sunday. She has previously won the Oscar for her 2012 documentary “Saving Face” where she brought forth the plight of Pakistan’s acid attack victims.

Her film, “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness”, is about Saba Maqsood, whose only “fault was falling in love”. It follows her journey for justice after she survives being shot and thrown in a canal by her family members for marrying a man of her choice.

For the 88th Academy Award ceremony, Pakistan’s leading fashion label, Sana Safinaz have created a bespoke ensemble for Obaid-Chinoy, complemented by custom jewellery exclusively designed for Sharmeen for the occasion by Kiran Fine Jewellery.
