Millennials, Gen Z And Generations Before

The Internet is dominated by the younger generations, specifically the Generation Y and Generation Z. If you are set to read this content, you probably fall into either of these two generations, if not, join me as I open you eyes to the generation you fall into.

Wondering why the labels and classifications? Well, Sociologists Karl Mannheim opines that it all comes down to generational location. Basically  referring to similar attributes exhibit by persons born at a specified time range.

HERE ARE THE GENERATIONAL CLASSIFICATION:

In discussing generational classification our focus will be, persons born in the United States.

Traditionalist or Silent Generation: These ones were born before 1945. Today, these persons are age 73 and older.

They have a wide range of experience  that shaped their personalities. Experiences like the first and second world War, the great depression or the invention of sliced bread, played a huge role in shaping the virtue of hard-work, commitment and practicality in them. They are not wasteful.  Studies suggest that the scarcity of resources during this period, led to them build morals that aided in survival.

It is important to note, that these persons hold respect, in high esteem.

Baby Boomers: There was an increase in birthrate, following  the Second World War. Person born between 1946-1964 are within the bracket of the Baby Boomers Generation. 

The traditionalist generation, gave birth to the baby boomers. There have been disagreements as to when this generation ended and when the Gen X began.

Some persons born between 1961 and 1964, do not identify as Baby Boomers because that do not exhibit  the collective emotional connection that shaped the Baby Boomers. Some events experienced  by the Baby Boomers Generation  are: The Cold War, The Vietnam War, The Red Scare, The Civil Right Movement, Moon Landing etc.

Generation X: These are persons born between 1965 – 1979. With both parents entering  the work force, children were peer oriented.

Events associated with this generation  include:

  • The emergence of computer.
  • Crack Epidemic.
  • AIDS crises.
  • The emergence of music videos, popularization of hip hop, raps etc.

Millennials:  Millennials have been the topic of most debates as to when they start. Some demographers believe that this generation began in 1977, while others believe it began in 1999.

Millennials, also referred  to as the Generation Y or Gen Y, are persons born between 1980 – 1995.

Preceding generation complain that this generation act selfish, narcissistic, entitled, addicted to their phones,  lazy etc. Well, this might be said of anyone, why tag an entire generation  as such.

It is important to note that most of today’s  technology began with the millennials.

Generation  Z: Generation  Z, also referred to as Gen Z comprises of person born in the 21th century or born between 1996 – to the present. They are also referred  to as Centennials.

They can be the children  of Gen X or the Millennials.

Parents who are Gen X often have a rough edge with their kids who are Gen Z in respect to the use of their digital gadgets. Gen X parents are quiet restrictive, while Parents who are Millennials  are more lenient in their approach with the personal digital usage of their Gen Z kids.
